The colours to reach for in October, and what to make with them
October is when the colour range earns its keep. Earthy oranges, deep reds, soft muted greens and near-blacks are all over the hedgerows — and they translate directly into felting projects. Here are the shades to reach for this month, with specific colour numbers, plus some project ideas for autumn and Halloween.
Autumn Colours: What to Use
- Deep reds — good for felted apples, autumn leaves, and home decor. Shades: 39 Cranberry, 40 Burgundy, Soft Fruit (Maori)
- Burnt oranges — essential for pumpkins, foxes, and any autumn project. Shades: 34 Tangerine, 35 Dark Orange, 36 Burnt Orange, Pumpkin (Maori), Calvados, Rust, Siena, Fox (sliver)
- Warm yellows and golds — sunflowers, leaves, harvest themes. Shades: 20 Sunflower, 12 Marigold, 13 Curry, Saffron, Melon
- Moss and forest greens — woodland creatures, leafy backgrounds, hedgerow details. Shades: 70, 107, Olive, Moss, Fur, Ivy, Leaf, Brush

Autumn Project Ideas
- Felted acorns. Work with Chestnut Brown and a warm golden yellow for the cap. Small enough to finish in an evening session. Good for wreaths, jar fillings, or table arrangements.
- Woodland creatures. Hedgehogs, foxes, and squirrels all use the earthy shades listed above. Nut, Earth, Ash, and Beaver work well for the base tones; the orange and rust shades add warmth to fox coats.
- Autumn leaf garland. Felt individual leaves in Burnt Orange, Melon, and Cranberry. Thread them when dry. A mix of three to four shades gives a more natural result than a single colour.
Useful Supplies for October Projects
- Felting needles — coarse gauges for initial shaping, medium for building texture, fine for faces and small details.
- Multi-needle holder — useful for larger surfaces like the sides of a pumpkin or a flat background. The 3-needle pen used with 2 needles is the most popular option.
- Foam mat — protects your work surface and gives the needle somewhere to go.
- Beginner kits — if you are new to needle felting, a kit includes everything you need to start without guessing at what to buy.
