About the wool

Carded wool is the easiest type to start with for needle felting because the fibres are already blended together. It builds up quickly, holds its shape well and works for both flat and three-dimensional projects.

Two useful needle sizes

The 36 gauge needles are useful for starting projects and building shape. The finer 40 gauge needles are better for smoothing the surface and adding smaller details.

Felting needles are sharp and brittle. Push the needle straight in and pull it straight out without twisting or bending it. Finger protectors can help while you learn, but careful needle placement is still important.

Using the mat

Lift your work from the foam regularly so it does not become attached. Covering the mat with a piece of scrap fabric can also help keep colours separate and extend the life of the foam.
