Exploring the Perfect Shade of White: Carded Wool from The Felt Box

At The Felt Box, we’re passionate about needle felting and providing you with the best quality supplies for your projects. One topic that often comes up in our community is the quest for the perfect shade of white wool. While the idea of a pure, snow white wool might sound ideal, in reality, all white wool tends to have a slight creamy tint. Let’s dive into the world of white wool and how you can achieve the best results for your needle felting projects.

⛄ The Myth of Snow White Wool

In my opinion, there’s no such thing as truly snow white wool in nature; all white wool has a hint of creaminess. However, that’s just my personal view. The "snow" colour in our Maori range is double-bleached New Zealand sheep’s wool. While it varies slightly from batch to batch and is quite white, it never truly reaches that pure, snow white shade.

🐏 The Challenge of Finding Pure White Wool

Finding pure snow white wool can be quite challenging. Even after extensive searching, I’ve yet to find a natural wool that meets this criterion perfectly. However, our Maori "snow" colour comes very close and is a popular choice for many needle felting projects.

🐏  Using Maori "Snow" Colour Wool and Carded NZ Shade #100

We use the Maori "snow" colour in our snowman kits, as well as the Snow White from our range of carded New Zealand wool. This wool is ideal for creating charming snowmen, winter scenes, and other projects where a bright white is desired. The slight creaminess adds a natural, authentic look to your creations.

⛄ Enhancing Whiteness with Artificial Fibres

Some people choose to add artificial fibres like nylon or viscose to achieve a brighter white for their projects. These fibres can help you get closer to that elusive pure white shade. At The Felt Box, we focus on natural wool, but we understand the appeal of adding a touch of artificial fibre for specific projects.

🐏 Tips for Working with White Wool

  1. Blend Wisely:If you’re aiming for a particular shade, consider blending different white wools to achieve the desired effect. Mixing in a small amount of artificial fibre can enhance the brightness.
  2. Choose the Right Project: White wool is perfect for winter-themed projects, bridal accessories, or any creation that needs a touch of elegance.
  3. Handle with Care: White wool can show dirt and oils easily, so make sure to handle it with clean hands and store it in a clean, dry place.
