1️⃣ What are your favourite needles to use?

I love Wiz Pick needles for their wide range of 16 types — many not found elsewhere. I also like Felt Alive needles with their rubber-coated, colour-coded handles in single, double, and quad sets. The only downside is that colour coding varies between brands, so the best way to find what works is simply to try them out!

2️⃣ What is your favourite type of wool to work with?

I use a lot of core wool — both natural and dyed — as all my dog sculptures begin with it. For coats, I mostly use dyed Merino that I hand blend myself. I love Merino because it comes in so many colours and blends beautifully.

3️⃣ What is the worst piece of advice you keep hearing for needle felters?

Some suggest beginners start felting with tops or roving, which does not felt well because it is too fine and smooth. Everyone new to felting should begin with core wool — it is perfect for learning shapes and surfaces. Another unhelpful idea is when people say, “don’t do that” simply because they cannot do it themselves!

4️⃣ What common mistakes do people make when they start out?

Many do not learn how to use the needle effectively — they choose the wrong type or felt too quickly, stabbing furiously without much progress. Others apply too much pressure or angle the needle incorrectly, which can cause breakage. Needle felting should be calm and relaxing, not painful or tiring!

5️⃣ What is the one thing a beginner could learn today that would make a difference?

Take your time — do not expect to create what others have taken years to master. Try different needles, experiment, and do not be afraid of failure; you learn the most from it. If you are unsure about your work, look at it in a mirror — it helps reveal imbalances. Most of all, enjoy your needle felting journey and keep your eyes on the needle!
