How to needle felt an Easter egg, step by step

Felted eggs make good seasonal decorations and are a useful beginner project. The oval shape is forgiving to work with, and you can add colour detail at whatever level suits you. Pastel shades work well for Easter, but any colours will do.

Here is how to make one.

What You Need

Carded wool in your chosen colours, a felting needle, and a foam pad. For pastel Easter shades, the Pastel Rainbow Wool Set is a good starting point. A 36-gauge needle is useful for the initial shaping; a 40-gauge works better for adding fine decoration at the end.

How to Felt an Easter Egg

Step 1: Shape the wool. Take a handful of carded wool and roll it in your hands until you have a rough oval. Compress it slightly before you begin felting.

Step 2: Start felting. Work your needle all over the surface, turning the egg regularly so it felts evenly on all sides. The wool will begin to compact and firm up as you go.

Step 3: Refine the shape. If the egg looks uneven, roll it gently between your hands to redistribute the wool, then continue felting. Repeat until the shape is smooth and consistent.

Step 4: Decorate. Pull thin strips of a contrasting colour and lay them onto the surface. Light needling will secure them in place. You can create zigzag lines, dots, or simple flower shapes. Work slowly at this stage — small details are easier to control than large ones.

Step 5: Finish. Once you are happy with the shape and decoration, give the whole egg a final light pass with the needle to smooth any loose fibres.
